Job Description

Position Purpose

As a Junior/Midweight Designer at Studio Blackburn, you’ll support and contribute to the studio’s creative output on brand identity projects, campaigns and rollouts, working across all stages of creative delivery. You’ll bring curiosity, initiative, and fresh ideas to the team, taking feedback openly and understanding that every task, big or small, plays a role in shaping high-quality work. You’ll support the internal team as well as being client-facing as your creative and strategic confidence grows. You’ll contribute to Studio Blackburn’s creative vision and high standards, helping deliver work that strengthens the studio’s reputation and, over time, playing an active role in elevating the studio’s visibility within the creative industry.

Key Responsibilities and Performance Indicators

Creative Design and Execution

  • Generate effective design concepts to meet client brief requirements.
  • Execute design with a high degree of technical proficiency, demonstrating a consistently high level of care and attention for all work.
  • Maintain an elevated level of awareness of current design trends, with a wide frame of reference and a commitment to ongoing professional development. This should be balanced with pushing the studio’s collective creative output with innovative design ideas.
  • Challenge and expand the creative boundaries of each project.
  • Manage several projects at once, adhering to studio project processes, schedules and deadlines.

Performance Indicators

Timely and accurate completion of design projects as per agreed briefs and deadlines. Positive feedback on the visual quality and effectiveness of design work from clients and internal stakeholders. Contribution to Studio Blackburn’s collective creative vision and standards.

Collaboration and Communication

  • Achieve a deep understanding of client needs through excellent communication skills.
  • Clearly communicate design concepts and rationale to stakeholders (clients, partners and colleagues), proving fulfilment of the client brief.
  • Build mutually respectful, trusting creative relationships with colleagues, understanding that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.
  • Provide and receive feedback to / from colleagues constructively and respectfully.
  • Actively participate in project meetings and provide design input.

Performance Indicators

Demonstrated effective communication with clients and partners. Effective collaboration on and contribution to projects evidenced by positive team feedback and successful project outcomes. Clear and concise communication in written and verbal interactions.

Required Skills and Competencies

  • 2–5 years of experience in a creative design role.
  • Strong portfolio, showing a range of design skills.
  • Proficiency in industry-standard design software (Adobe CC, Figma, Slack).
  • Strong people skills, to collaborate effectively with design, project management, and client teams.
  • Excellent verbal communication and presentation skills, enabling an impressive understanding of client needs and the ability to articulate and sell creative concepts to clients.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Self-organising, positive, and open outlook, with an initiative-taking and self-starting attitude.
  • Resilience under pressure and against deadlines.
  • An understanding that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, working effectively with other departments internally as well as external partners: printers, copywriters, photographers, other designers, account executives, web developers and marketing specialists.
  • Committed to sharing experiences and knowledge to enhance the overall creative culture, actively contributing to making Studio Blackburn a place of continuous growth, innovation and continued excellence.

Review and Development

Your performance will be reviewed annually as part of our formal performance management process, covering your responsibilities, key contributions, and development goals. In addition, we’ll have regular, informal check-ins throughout the year, along with collaborative studio critiques to support ongoing growth and creative development.

Working at Studio Blackburn

Our hours are 09.15–17.45, with projects scheduled as realistically as possible within these boundaries. We believe these working hours help support a healthy balance between studio life and life outside of work, something we see as essential to creative energy and long-term wellbeing. The role is office-based, though from time to time you may be invited to attend industry events or exhibitions. Studio Blackburn is committed to protecting personal time and encouraging a healthy work culture. We ask colleagues to avoid sending or responding to work-related emails outside of business hours wherever possible.
